stoma
A stoma is an opening onto the surface of the body. It includes where the bowel or part of
the urinary tract is opened onto the abdominal wall. The name of the stoma will vary
according to which part of the urinary tract or bowel is involved: a colostomy is where the
colon is brought to the abdominal wall; an ileostomy, is where the ileum (part of the small
bowel) is brought to the abdominal wall. A bag is attached to the surface of the abdominal
wall to collect faeces and may need to be emptied or changed during school hours.
