ERIC service user and advocate honoured with prestigious national award for inspiring advocacy work around stomas
Katie Thirling, the 9-year-old girl who fronted ERIC's Summer Appeal to raise awareness of stomas and funds for the charity, has been named one of the recipients of the 2025 British Citizen Youth Award (BCyA).

The BCyA is a national honour recognising extraordinary young people who make a positive impact in their communities, society, and beyond. The award celebrates children and teenagers who demonstrate exceptional kindness, courage, and community spirit, making Britain a better place through their actions and example.
Katie’s stoma journey
Katie’s journey has been one of remarkable strength and compassion. At the age of seven, she underwent surgery to be fitted with a stoma — a life-changing experience. Katie has chosen to share her story publicly, including through ERIC, using her experience to educate, support, and empower others living with similar medical needs.
Determined to break down stigma surrounding hidden disabilities, Katie speaks openly about life with a stoma to raise awareness and promote inclusion. She has campaigned for stoma-friendly toilets in schools and public spaces, advocating for greater dignity and accessibility for people with hidden conditions. Katie has also supported us at ERIC, The Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity, taking part in our summer appeal to raise both funds and awareness for the cause close to her heart.
A role model
Through community events, school talks, and social media, she continues to inspire others by showing that a medical condition does not define who you are or limit what you can achieve. Her advocacy has already made a tangible difference — her school has introduced greater understanding and adjustments to ensure it is more inclusive and stoma-aware.
Katie is fast becoming a role model for younger children, showing that courage and kindness can create lasting change.
Katie’s mum, Kelly Fowler, said: “We are beyond proud of Katie and everything she stands for. She has faced challenges with incredible positivity and has turned them into opportunities to help others. Katie’s openness and determination are changing perceptions and giving hope to children and families across the country.”
The British Citizen Youth Award (BCyA) is presented annually to young people across the UK who make a positive difference to society. Each medal celebrates individuals who demonstrate initiative, compassion, and selflessness in the service of others. The award programme aims to highlight the importance of young voices in shaping a kinder, more inclusive Britain.
