Urology Awareness Month: what you need to know
September is Urology Awareness Month – here’s what you need to know about healthy children’s bladders and wee from ERIC, The Children’s Bladder and Bowel Charity.

September is Urology Awareness Month. Here at ERIC, The Children’s Bladder and Bowel Charity, we are all about promoting healthy bladders and bowels for children and their families – and sharing information and advice for when things aren’t going quite right.
The theme of Urology Awareness Month 2025 is ‘Bladder Leakage: Time to Act’. We’ve got lots of content and advice to share that we hope will support families living with these issues.
Did you know…?
- A healthy bladder stores urine at low pressure and should be emptied between 4 – 7 times each day (for children aged around 5 and over)
- How much should a child drink? 6-8 cups every day, more when it’s hot or if they’re exercising.
- Around 15% of all 7-year-olds regularly wet the bed (ref).
- Bedwetting is a medical condition which should be treated in children from age 5.
- Around 1 in 10 girls and 1 in 30 boys will have had a UTI by the age of 16 years (ref).
- 2.1% of girls and 2.2% of boys will have had a UTI before the age of 2 years (ref).
Does your child have wee problems like daytime wetting, night time wetting (bedwetting), wee withholding or UTIs?
Or do you want to know how best to look after your child’s bladder, to keeping everything working healthily?
Check out our advice on children’s bladder health including our wee checker and how much your children should drink.
We also have information and advice on bedwetting (reasons for it, how to stop it, bedwetting alarms and tips for nights away from home) and wee withholding (why children might withhold wee and how to stop it).
